Website redesigns are a major undertaking: analyzing what works and doesn’t work about the current website, hours of looking at other library websites for ideas, considering best practices, and brainstorming creative innovations…not to mention building out the site and testing. One of the most important aspects of the redesign process is understanding the user experience, yes! I mean you! One of our main goals is to build a website that is not only visually appealing, but also is intuitive and user friendly.

April launched the beginning of the library website redesign team soliciting feedback from the La Verne community. We started with a very basic user survey asking what you come to the Wilson Library website to do, what you like, dislike, and if anything was missing. While we had a smallish group of responses (just over 300), the results gave us a considerable amount of ideas and data to consider. Even though the focus of the questions were the website many people commented on other library needs and wants. Those responses are being compiled and will be shared with the rest of the librarians. There will be a blog post on the results of the survey in the near future.

Last week 17 wonderful Leos volunteered their time to participate in a card sort study. “What’s a card sort?,” you ask. It is a user study that helps us get a better understanding of how users (you!) would categorize and label the information/links on our website. Each participant was given a deck of 74 cards and ask to sort the cards into categories, and then label each category. We are only in the beginning of analyzing the data we collected, yet it is fascinating to consider how we each label and categorize information differently. For more detailed information on the card sort study results, visit the blog in the near future.

As the website redesign project progresses, we’ll keep blogging and letting you know where we are in the process!
