Philosophy
The philosophy here is dedication and education, providing method to madness, to work hard and play hard. You are not here to serve the program; it is here to serve you. However, we have not, cannot, and will not make guarantees. We thrive under a meritocracy. There is no such thing as “seniority” here. The only thing we can provide is the right amount of forensic training and the privilege of trying out for team slots. Try-outs for representing our program are the heaviest competition that you will face, speaking among some of the best in the nation to compete against the very best in the world. It is possible that a person will be a part of our program, but never represent it outside the campus. That part is left up to you. But remember, you are a La Verne student first, a La Verne forensics competitor second. Come here for the school, not the program.
Opportunity
Academic
If you come, we have much to offer you. We are pleased to award deserving students Performance Scholarships. These are granted on the basis of talent, industry, and level of commitment.
Competition
In the past few years, we’ve traveled to England, Australia, Scotland, Canada, South Africa, Singapore, Malaysia, Ireland, Thailand, and Botswana and who knows where else in the near future. We regularly compete against Oxford, Cambridge, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Harvard, Sydney, Glasgow, Melbourne, Monash, Ateneo de Manila, University College Dublin, etc.
In 2000 and 2001, we were the top-ranked team at the World Universities Debating Championships from this hemisphere. In 2003, we were the only American team that qualified for the elimination rounds of the World Championships. In 2006 we won the National Open. In 2007, we won the United States Universities National Championship. In 2011 we won the Americas’ Cup. Each year, we are committed to sending our top teams to the U.S. Universities Debating Championships, the Oxford International Intervarsity Championships and the World Championships.
