The University of La Verne Theatre will present the highly-acclaimed musical comedy smash The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee for seven performances, opening November 13th, the beloved musical comedy won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Book for a Musical.
Alumnus, professional director, and choreographer Zach Johnson returns to the University of La Verne’s theatre to fulfill his nine year dream of directing
The performance features the lives of six quirky students dealing with parents, peer pressure, puberty and the strain of competition at the annual Putnam Country Bee. The students are chaperoned by the equally quirky adults Rona Lisa Perreti, (Jessie Bias) a top realtor and former bee champion, Vice Principal Doug Panch, (Alex Frietas) and the comfort counselor Mitch Mahoney (Ernie Reyes) here to complete his community service hours.

The satirical musical by Rachel Sheinkin and William Flinn captured Zach’s heart when he first saw it back in 2005. Zach says that “The University’s mentorship style program empowers former students like myself to take the knowledge and experience learned to a whole new level.”
